2024 Smart women securities stock competition

Brothers Jackie Liu (Alpha Nu, DC ‘26), Evelyn Huang (Alpha Nu, TPR ‘27), Annika Choi (Alpha Nu, TPR ‘27), and Grace Zheng (Alpha Nu, TPR ‘27) place first place out of fifteen teams. The team was recognized for their exceptional performance in the stock competition organized by Smart Women Securities (SWS), showcasing unparalleled investment analysis, market insight, and financial acumen.


2025 Tepper Innovation Scholars

Brothers Matthew Coyle (Alpha Lambda, CIT ‘25) and Victoria Nguyen (Alpha Lambda, CIT ‘25) were selected to join the 2025 Tepper Innovation Scholars. The Innovation Scholars program fosters innovation and entrepreneurship and seeks to increase the number of successful startup companies initiated by or involving Carnegie Mellon University’s undergraduate students.

2021 Andrew Carnegie Society Scholars

Brothers Jay Rao (Alpha Gamma, TPR ‘21) and Fiona Dubrosa (Alpha Beta, DC ‘21) were selected to join the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Society Scholars. ACS Scholars are undergraduate students who embody Carnegie Mellon’s high standards of academic excellence, volunteerism, leadership and involvement in student organizations, athletics or the arts. They are selected each year by their deans and department heads to represent their class in service and leadership.

2020-21 Student Body President

After a successful campaign, brother Govind Menon (Alpha Delta, IS ‘22) was elected Student Body President for the 2020-21 school year. Govind and his running mate’s platform was focused on Diversity and Equity, Unity, and a collective responsibility for student rights. Alyssa Song (Alpha Zeta, TPR ‘23) was also involved in the campaign as a marketer, designing most of the materials for the campaign’s social media efforts.

2020 School of Architecture Awards

In Spring 2020, Carnegie Mellon’s School of Architecture held their annual Awards Program to recognize outstanding students in various disciplines of achievement. Vincent DeRienzo (Alpha Alpha, SoA B.Arch  ‘20) received recognition for two awards: the Gindroz Prize for Summer Travel and Study in Europe, and the Measuring & Monitoring Services, Inc. Internship Fund. Both awards recognized Vincent’s outstanding portfolio of work and future goals in travelling and working across the world. 

Additionally, Ammar Hassonjee (Alpha Gamma, SoA B.Arch ‘22) received first place in the Epic Metals Competition, where teams of 2 competed to design an innovative object utilizing metal deck systems. Ammar and his partner designed an air quality mobile lab, which allowed them to receive recognition from the panel of judges.

2020 Deloitte Case Competition

At the annual Deloitte Case Competition in the Spring of 2020, brothers Adrienne Wang (Alpha Zeta, DC  ‘23), Emma Yukevich (Alpha Zeta, TPR  ‘23), Jamie Liu (Alpha Zeta, TPR  ‘23), and Susie Kim (Alpha Zeta, SoA B.Arch ‘23) competed together as one team to win second place. Together, they came up with a creative solution to overhaul a failing toy company, and were awarded based on the originality and professionalism of their proposal.

2020: UBA Case Challenge

At the annual UBA Case Challenge in the Spring of 2020, brothers Liam Walsh (Omega, TPR ‘20), Adrienne Wang (Alpha Zeta, DC ‘23), Bryce Vanden Avond (Alpha Zeta, DC ‘23), and Jamie Liu (Alpha Zeta, TPR ‘23) competed together as a team to win first place. They were asked to create and recommend a strategic plan to help Amazon stay ahead of the herd on sustainability and maintain long term profitability. The judges were impressed with the thoroughness of their proposal and professionalism.

2018 MedHacks Competition

The Rethink the Rink hack-a-thon, held March 2017 in conjunction by the Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey Team, Covestro Materials, and CMU Engineering, challenged students to improve player safety in ice hockey through innovative design and technology. Henry Peck (Chi, CIT ‘19) won the “Most Innovative” award for a collision analytics app and feedback system, which sparked his interest in hacking. Ultimately, he was motivated to attend MedHacks; the world’s largest medical hackathon, challenging 500+ students to revolutionize the global state of healthcare in only 36 hours. In Sept 2018, Henry participated and won the Namecheap Inc. Innovation award for his team’s product; a real-time EEG visualizer which helps audiologists streamline the tuning process for cochlear implants. Currently, Henry is on leave from CMU and working at Intuitive Surgical, where he is excited to be at the forefront of healthcare innovation and is dedicated to building products which change lives.

2018 IEEE/RSJ International Conference

Since her freshman spring, Jessica Yin (Omega, CIT '20) has been doing research at the Soft Machines Lab focusing on off-the-shelf microelectronic sensors integration in soft robots. This summer, she co-authored a paper for one of the top 3 most prestigious robotics conferences, the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems and will be co-presenting it in Madrid, Spain in October. She will also be presenting at the National Society of Woman Engineers conference as a top 10 national finalist in the Undergraduate Collegiate Research Poster Competition in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

2018-19 Student Body Vice President

In the spring of 2018, Alpha Kappa Psi brother Tyler Davis (Chi, TSB ‘19) ran for Student Body Vice President to further his dedication to the CMU community. After campaigning for several weeks and participating in a live debate alongside his running mate Roshni Mehta, he was successfully elected. His focus for the year is to lead initiatives related to Professionalism and Diversity & Inclusion on campus. Brothers Liam Walsh (Omega, TSB '20), Emma Frenchu (Chi, DC '19), and Christina Li (Alpha Beta, TSB '21) are serving on Roshni and Tyler's cabinet. 


2016 BOEING Uplift IT Case Competition 

 In August 2016, AKPsi brother Emily Su (Upsilon, DC'18) competed and won the Boeing Uplift IT Case Competition. Emily worked on a team with two other Information Systems majors to build a data visualization application, Security Pulse, that tracks security threats on planes. The team split up components of the development, and Emily was in charge of the overall design and user interface of the finished product. As a reward, Emily and her team were invited to tour the Boeing Everett Factory in Seattle, Washington.

2016 Money 20/20 Conference SPEAKER

In October 2015, Alpha Kappa Psi brother Sid Malladi (Chi, DC'18) presented at the Money 20/20 conference in Las Vegas, NV. The conference is a gathering of the world's leading financial technology companies and the most impressive startups in the industry. Sid's startup, Hyppe, "a modern location discovery platform that identifies the most trending locations around a user in near real time", was selected as a finalist among thirty other startups. Through the conference, Sid garnered valuable connections in the financial tech space and further publicized Hyppe. 


2016 TARTAN DATA SCIENCE CUP

In March 2016, a group of AKPsi brothers placed first in the inaugural Tartan Data Science Cup, held by the Carnegie Mellon's Statistics department. Shreya Punya (Chi, DC'19), Rohan Nagalkar (Chi, TSB'19), and Apoorva Havanur (Upsilon, DC'18) placed first competing against 100 undergraduate students. Students were tasked to use data on the NYC bike share system, Citi Bike NYC, to determine where two new bicycle stations should be added. The AKPsi team used features such as trip duration, start and end time and the birth year of riders to predict gender of non-subscribers. The team used this information to recommend new station placement that would provide the largest increase in female subscriptions.


2015 PNC CASE COMPETITION

In March 2015, two groups consisting of some AKPsi brothers placed first and second in UFA’s 5th Annual PNC Case Competition open to all freshman and sophomores. Teams were assigned a case featured on reality television show, Dragons’ Den, in which they pitched the company, C.R. Plastics, to a panel of venture capitalists. Seeking capital for the company, teams thoroughly analyzed the company’s financial statements and models to determine the needed investment. Team Gamma, consisting of Amy Fan (Upsilon, TSB'18), Roma Desai (Upsilon, TSB'18), Misha Yu (Upsilon, TSB'18), and Habiba Shalaby came in first place, followed by Team Theta, consisting of Chris Ruland (Sigma, TSB'17), Cosette Esnes (Tau, TSB'17), Raunak Jhaveri (Sigma, TSB'17), and Jay B. Kim in second place. Winners received Visa gift cards from PNC.

AKPsi raises over $1000 for CHARITY in 2014 brainteaser competition

Not only does AKPsi emphasize professionalism and brotherhood, but it is also puts a focus on serving the community. This past year, in the annual charity brainteaser, brothers were able to raise over $1000 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh. This charity event is open to all CMU students who choose to put their brains to work for a good cause.


2014 UBA CASE COMPETITION

In November 2014, Team Alpha Associates consisting of some AKPsi brothers placed first in the annual Tepper-sponsored UBA Case Competition consisting of 10 teams, including a team from the Qatar CMU campus. Team Alpha Associates included Chris Ruland (Sigma, TSB'17), David Babollal (Nu, DC'14), Pavithran Nair, and Melania Bai. Students were tasked with analyzing the current state of the company Yahoo!, developing a long-term plan to create sustainable growth for the company, and solving issues facing the company such as debt and declining usage. The teams presented and were judged by a panel of faculty, including Dr. Milton Cofield and a visiting professor from Qatar, with the top two teams moving onto a final round presentation. 


2014 Ford Campus AmBassador Challenge

An entire group consisting of Alpha Kappa Psi brothers represented Carnegie Mellon in the second annual Ford College Ambassador Challenge, a semester-long marketing competition between various schools to help introduce the Ford Motor Company brand to college students. Our brothers Chloe Chia (Pi, BXA'16), Sarabeth Perry (Sigma, DC'16),  Jay Chopra (Pi, DC'15) and David Babollal (Nu, DC'14) competed against other schools in three marketing challenges that included a viral video, an on-campus career development event, and a test-drive marathon. The CMU team won the entire competition with a 1000+ vote lead on the video, and 336 test drive signups, earning the maximum $6000 winnings to be donated to the charity of their choice, the Children's Institute of Pittsburgh. As a reward, they got to own a Ford vehicle for one month, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Ford’s headquarters in Michigan to network with company executives.


2013 Commencement
student speaker

Fellow Alpha Kappa Psi Brother, now alumnus Brian Groudan (Kappa, DC'12) was chosen to represent his class as student speaker at Carnegie Mellon University's 116th Commencement on May 19, 2013. Brian graduated with honors from the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences in December 2012 with a double major in Information Systems and Human-Computer Interaction, and a minor in communication design.

He was a co-founder of PayTango, a fingerprint-based payment and identification system that debuted on the Pittsburgh campus and has garnered headlines across the United States. He is now making waves as an Interaction Designer at Google.
